In January 2007 we will sell the first pieces of clothes that are the outcome of a
developmental process generated using a horizontal, non-hierarchical system of
administration, building on mutual interest, pleasure, collaboration and non-traditional
systems of exchange.
The first phase, running from October 2006 until January 2007, will start with three
workshops. Each of these, organized in alliance with an existing institution, will be
managed and organized by someone who is not a fashion designer. The ideas generated
will not only benefit the larger project, but the workshop host and participants as well.
These three workshops will revolve around the broad understanding of the notion of
clothing, including the experience of clothing and its possibilities. The workshops will
culminate in ideas as well as prototypes .
In the next phase, for a period of 6 weeks, the design team, led by Myrza de Muynck,
will develop these results further into final, salable items of clothing. The design team
will work as part of the exhibition ‘If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be a part of your
revolution’, which will open on November 16th 2006 at De Appel. Visitors will be
allowed to follow the creative process from a distance.
The design team consists not only of clothing and fashion professionals, but of
creative artists as well, who will work on the collection for a period of one or two weeks.
Instead of a fictional marketing “target audience”, the resulting garments will reflect both
the concepts generated as well as the desires of those involved in the project, brought to
fruition through creative moments of fun, interaction, synchronicity and cooperation.
The pieces that will be created are directly related to people, the creative process and the
physical experience of clothing. Shops will not be able to reorder; everything that will be
made is what will be sold. The pieces are not bound to the seasons, much like vintage
clothing, collectors items or art: the value of each piece will increase with time. The goal
is to offer an alternative to the current pervasive economical model, based on volume
and quantity, reducing the customer to a passively consuming object.
